FAQs
Doulas sound great! Is there anything doulas don’t do?
Doulas are not clinicians. We don’t diagnosis, prescribe, and nor do we catch babies. But that’s our secret advantage! While nurses, midwives and doctors are responsible for the medical/clinical aspects of labour, birth and newborn life, our entire focus can be you: providing you information to make informed choices, comfort measures, and continuous support.
What is the ideal time to hire a doula?
When you know you’re about to be a parent! Spaces for care are limited, so if you’re interested in my services, please be in touch as soon as you find out you’re expecting. With that said, I have also been hired by clients while they are in labour—so regardless of how far along you are, if you have a need for support, please reach out.
Do you support hospital births or homebirths?
I believe that you are the best person to decide where to birth your baby. My only goal is to support you in the birth you choose. I have attended births at 13 hospitals and at homes large and small. Whatever the setting, my clients are always attended by a care provider (obstetrician, family doctor or registered midwife).
Who needs a birth doula?
People who are pregnant! My clients have included:
People who are intending an unmedicated, physiological birth, and people who are committed to birth with an epidural;
People who are considered low-risk in pregnancy, and people who are have complicated pregnancies and those with complex medical histories;
People under 20, and people who are having their first child in their 40s;
People who are married couples, and solo parents by chance and by choice;
People from multiple ethnic and religious communities;
People who are serving as surrogates and those who have arranged adoptions for the child they are carrying.
I love the idea of a doula, but it feels like a lot of money to spend. Do you have suggestions?
I get it! Spending on doula care is a significant expense—it’s also a serious investment in your wellbeing and a strong start for parenting. If doula support is of interest but seems beyond your budget, you might consider asking friends and family to forego the cute outfits and pool their resources toward your doula costs. I also offer payment plans to spread the cost of doula services over the length of your pregnancy.
Some employee insurance plans cover a portion of the cost of doula services. Doula services may be listed directly in your plan, or you may be able to draw on discretionary funds through the health and wellness portion of your plan.
Do you take credit cards?
I do! Also e-transfer and cash. Please remember that all services—whatever the method of payment—are subject to 13% HST.
I don’t see any offerings for overnight postpartum care. Is it part of your services?
A good night’s sleep is important! I’m not offering overnight doula support but I’m happy to refer you to doulas who do.
You ask.
I answer.
The mimi the doula practice is situated on the traditional territories of the Mississauga and Haudenosaunee nations, and within the lands protected by the “dish with one spoon” wampum agreement.
